BKK Food Trip

May 06, 2019

Please pardon this yet another ancient post from my previous escapade. It is from 2 years ago so please just bear with it. I simply needed to post this just so I can at least easily go back into these little food adventure I got into.

BurgerSam
We arrived in Bangkok thru Suvarnhabumi Airport, which (from my stand point at that time) was looking a bit outdated. We (as in my whole family) landed late in the evening so we weren’t able to roam around the airport so we  went straight to our lodging. Hotels can be a bit pricey so we always opt on getting our place to stay on Airbnb. We ended up getting ourselves a 2-floor townhouse near an MRT station that I already forgot the name.
We were greeted by a Burger Cafe, which was occupying the ground floor of our lodging space. And you guessed it right, dinner was served here, on the tables of “Burgersam”. To be honest though, nothing too special with this place. They offered the usual American dishes like steaks, pastas, and of course do not forget the burgers; and tastes were like the normal ones that I usually eat. But anyway, since we just got off the plane that time, I was able to stuffed in a steak and a pasta right into my growling stomach so as to satisfy my hunger.

Terminal 21
First stop of the day was in Pier 21 Food Court which was located in Terminal 21 Mall. This was not the typical food court that I normally see. The place was clean and not shabby unlike the others. Another unusual thing here was the fact that you must get a card first, top it with your Thai money and then use that card to pay for your food. Cool right?
There were seriously so much foods to choose from, most of which that I do not normally see being served on my everyday plate. And I’m not actually quite sure if the price was cheap or what ‘coz we’re only able to eat here once, but I heard they give the most affordable prices.

Well of course, I didn’t let myself miss the chance on tasting  some of Thai’s most famous dishes like the papaya salad, pad thai, mango sticky rice and bubble tea. I also got a pork dish with some kind of sauce served with a boiled egg and a cup of rice, but I forgot the name. hahaha!

Would you believe me if I tell you that this was my first to try out a pad thai dish? Yes, this was my record breaking first. Hahah! You see, I am a very picky eater before, but then everything changed when I went overseas to work, where my food choices gradually widened out. Back to the pad thai though, I was disappointed. Not with the dish but to myself - that I did not tried this delicious noodles before!

Ratchada Rod Fai Night Market
Rod Fai is often referred to as the “Train Market” because it was originally located next to Bangkok’s suburban train lines. Rod Fai has long been known as the second largest night market in Thailand with a wide variety of fashion products, food and entertainment area. With the success of the original Rod Fai night market, Thailand has launched its second Rod Fai market in 2015, commonly known as Talad Rod Fai or Rod Fai Night Market in Ratchada or Ratchada train market. -- Local insider

Okay. So this was a foodie paradise. I mean seriously, there are rows of food stalls with variety of dishes that you can choose from! It can satisfy anyone’s craving - from meats, to seafoods, to noodles, to veggies, to desserts and to the adventurous ones - the exotics. Here are some photo-snippets of the mouth-watering dishes that I snatched while choosing a dinner for myself.

The crowd here plus finding yourself a spot to sit down and enjoy your food were one heck of a challenge. Though, I think this night market was built to eat foods without sitting down? Anyway, there were still some stalls that got their own space for tables and chairs, but you need to buy their products first of course. And since I was with 2 of my nephews and both my parents are not getting any younger now,  we ended up ordering a soup bowl filled with lots of seafood like lobsters, pawns and crabs just to get them their sitting spot. However, I was not able to took a photo of their soup because I was busy myself finding my way in this maze-like food market on what to stuff my stomach with. Hahaha!

After fulling myself with these foods, I challenged myself with the exotic ones that this place got to offer -- eating the insects. Yes! I did ate those things which I think tasted pretty decent by the way. However, my eyes were shut tightly with each bite to avoid getting nauseated with the things I am putting in my mouth. Hahaha! Talk about blind-tasting.

Honestly though I am telling you, it tasted really good withall  the crunchiness of its "shell" from deep-frying it plus the spices that were seasoned with it were all on point. I loved the grasshopper the most, don't get me wrong though, I still do not like the actual insects. What I was not really fond from all of these were the silk worms because of its slimy inside texture. Bleehhhh!

 Gloria Jean's Coffee
Gloria Jean's was not exclusive to Thailand and it has lots of its franchise all over the world even in the Philippines. But believe it or not, I only got to taste its products during this trip.

We were on our 3rd day in BKK and we have just finished visiting the "Grand Palace". The place was undergoing some renovation that time, so we didn't get to enjoy some of its structures. You can check out my visit to the Grand Palace here.

After walking and taking photos for almost 3 hours under the scorching sun, we decided to take a break in Gloria Jean's because this was the nearest air-conditioned place we found and we were in desperate need to cool ourselves down.

Hungry from the long walks, I ordered an iced latte, a beef burger and chips and a pad thai spaghetti. Ordered this bunch 'coz I need to get back all the calories I've shed on those 3 hours! hahaha

You already noticed that I am one of those people who prioritizes photo-op first before satisfying the hunger. Peace for that if anyone is not into this idea... So, that concludes mu 3 days food porn in Bangkok and the main highlight of this is of course the EXOTIC FOODS! hahaha! I mean, not anyone would dare to eat those creepy things right? And... I was one of those who have the audacity to do so. Booyah! hahaha!.
Watch out for my next posts on my other adventures in Bangkok. Hmmm... And I hope it will not take me another decade to do so.
